Inter Miami suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Minnesota United, their fourth loss in five games. Despite 67 percent possession and a goal from Lionel Messi in the 48th minute, the absence of Luis Suarez was felt. Goals from Hlongwane, Markanich, Weigandt, and Lod sealed Minnesota’s win, leaving Miami in fourth place with 21 points.
After the optimism sparked by a 4-1 win over New York Red Bulls last week, Inter Miami's struggles resurfaced on Saturday as they fell 4-1 to Minnesota United. Despite Lionel Messi's fifth goal of the season early in the second half, Inter Miami suffered their fourth defeat in five matches, casting doubt over their campaign’s momentum. Missing Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez due to a migraine, Inter Miami dominated possession with 67 percent, attempted 10 shots to Minnesota's 8, and completed 723 passes, nearly three times more than their opponent.
However, the stats failed to convert into a result. Minnesota struck first through Bongokuhle Hlongwane in the 32nd minute and doubled the lead in stoppage time via Anthony Markanich’s header. Messi pulled one back in the 48th minute after a link-up with Jordi Alba, but the comeback hopes were short-lived. Marcelo Weigandt headed in a third for Minnesota in the 68th minute, and just two minutes later, Robin Lod made it 4-1.
Inter Miami remain fourth in the Eastern Conference with 21 points from 12 games, recording six wins, three draws, and three losses. The performance highlighted their over-reliance on Messi and the need for tactical recalibration ahead of the crucial summer fixtures.
